How Tennessee Valley Humidity Affects Architectural Shingles

An architectural shingle is asphalt, fiberglass mat, and mineral granules. It is designed to take sun and rain from above. What shortens its life in the Tennessee Valley is what happens underneath: a hot, damp attic that never gets a chance to dry out.

Through a North Alabama summer, an under-ventilated attic can hold heat well after sunset. The shingle above it stays hot longer each day, the asphalt softens, and the granules that protect it loosen a little faster than they otherwise would. Add high humidity and you get condensation on the underside of the decking on cool mornings, which is how plywood delaminates from a leak that never existed.

We check intake ventilation at the eaves before anything else, because that is what is usually missing. A ridge vent with no matching soffit intake does not move air; it just looks like ventilation. We also look for blocked soffit baffles behind insulation, bathroom fans dumping moist air into the attic instead of outside, and rusted nail points on the underside of the decking, which is a reliable sign of repeated condensation.

On the roof surface we look for granule loss in the shingle field, cupping or curling at the shingle edges, and sealant strips that no longer hold. Those three together on a roof that is not especially old usually point back to attic conditions rather than the shingle product.

Balanced ventilation is the fix, and it means matching intake at the eaves to exhaust at the ridge. During a replacement we calculate that for the attic volume rather than reusing whatever was there. Sealing attic bypasses and venting bath fans through the roof or gable also removes moisture at the source.
